Officers from the Darien Police Department on Monday, Oct. 28 last year received a report from a Hollow Tree Ridge Road resident that her wallet had been stolen by her car, and her credit cards were being used repeatedly.
According to police, after receiving a Fraud Alert from her bank, she checked her account, and discovered that four cards were used nearly a dozen times at multiple locations.
The cards were used at several gas stations, at an I-95 northbound rest stop, and Walmart in New Haven. In total, the fraudulent charges totaled more than $10,000.
The investigation into the stolen wallet and credit cards identified Barre, Vermont resident Joseph Braley as a suspect, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
At the time he was named a suspect, Braley was incarcerated at the Suffolk County House of Corrections in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Braley waived extradition and was transported back to Fairfield County on Thursday, Jan. 16.
Braley was charged with identity theft, conspiracy to identity theft, illegal use of credit cards, larceny and conspiracy to commit larceny. He was unable to post a $25,000 bond and was remanded into custody on Friday, Jan. 17.
